“I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for your generous and thoughtful grant. I made this extremely challenging decision for many reasons, but I would like to share one specific reason with all of you. During WWII, my grandmother, who was 14 years old, was taken to Birkenau Extermination Camp in Poland. During an uprising one faithful night, my grandmother and a few other lucky individuals managed to escape. Shortly after their triumphant break out, they were faced with yet another challenge; they needed to hide before being caught yet again. A Christian family that ran a cave for other runaway found them. The family brought my grandmother, and many other helpless individual’s, food as often as possible. While in the cave for over 9 months, my grandmother met a widowed man, also from Poland, who had lost his former wife and children in the chaos of the war. The two fell in love and married after the liberation and created their own family. If not for their own happiness they were “fruitful and multiplied” to spite all of the Nazi’s who hoped to decimate the entire Jewish population. If it were not for extraordinary and self-less people, like the Christian family who hid my grandparents, I would not be here today. I want to thank you all for helping me make this meaningful and life- changing move to Israel possible. I can only imagine how proud my grandparents would be to see their granddaughter fighting back to all those who, yet again, wish to destroy the Jewish people. It is groups like Ebenezer that make me hopeful of a peaceful and united world.”
